Effects of Climatic Changes in Our Ecosystem
Climate is an integral part of our environment. It plays a crucial role to the existence of all forms of live on earth. It affects us in various ways and that’s why there is need to have accurate models which are able to detect any changes in climatic patterns. For instance, there is need to predict situations of heavy snowy fog or flooding so as to caution those who might be affected and thus help to prevent any losses of lives or destruction of property for the affected victims. Such huge losses usually have a negative economic impact to the affected nation as it tries to bring normalcy to the affected victim through various programs aimed at assisting the victims.
If we were to look closely at the real causes of climatic changes especially in the recent years, much will be attributed to human activities with greenhouse emissions contributing the largest percentage of the causes. We all need to learn and understand that climatic changes can yield to catastrophic disasters such as hurricanes, acid rain, earthquakes, tornadoes, wild fires, tsunamis etc.
The increase of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is not healthy for human beings and can lead to certain respiratory diseases. Also as the carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere trap heat making earth to become warmer, there are high chances of desertification which may affects the agricultural sector. There are many other effects of global warming in the ecosystem.
Other living things will usually be affected by disruption of food webs such as nesting birds which have for years stuck to a particular routine of migrating from one place to another as season’s changes. There is also a likelihood that animals that live in Polar Regions such as polar bears may become endangered as their habitats disappear due to the climatic changes. Marine life will too feel the effects.
Reducing Greenhouse gaseous Emissions to Prevent Global Warming
Although I’m not an expert in matters concerning climate and the changes that have been happening, I have for long closely followed various discussions about the effects of climatic changes. I have read various books and editorial addressing the issue and also watched several nature documentaries that predicts what it would be like if the rate at which the earth is warming continues.
There are times that I lamented much at the numerous summits and meeting by world leaders to address the issue, but failed to reach at a common workable agreement. I would at times write editorial seeking to address the issue in various magazines. At times I would discuss with my friends about the time bomb that earth is sitting on as the earth continues to warm. But then I realized that I was not helping the situation in any way by bickering.
I figured out that as much as I accused industries for the gaseous emissions, other human-related activities still contributed in the changes. Since changes starts with each of us, I was ready to play my part.
Embracing a Green World for a Healthier and Safer Environment
So where does an individual start addressing such a situation? The changes must start with you. The first thing that I did was to ensure that I started using renewable energy at home. With that in mind, I went ahead and had some solar panels installed to provide me with the energy that I needed at home. I also ensured that I had put measure to curb any undue usage of the energy in every way possible. I wanted to be exemplary to my friends, co-workers and the community in general.
Having accomplished the first phase of my plans, I embarked on a mission to sensitize the community as a whole to take initiative in reducing gaseous emissions. One of the best ways to do that, as I figured out, was by encouraging them to plant trees. Trees and plants usually take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen; hence by plating more trees, then there would be a reduction of the gas. I used schooling communities and other community-based organizations in realizing my objectives. Most of them had no problems with scheduling a day to go out planting trees in park, foot trails and forested regions where most of the trees had been logged.
By the second year in my activities, I had extended my efforts not only to my community but to the neighboring communities who saw the benefits of planting trees and how beautiful my community was due to our efforts. I also got the support of various organizations that helped me in planning for the activities. They would provide me with seedlings and funds group that I had formed to champion for the needs to embrace a green living.
It was in that year too that my efforts were recognized by the county director and I got honor by an award of commendation for my efforts. Today I still advocate for various initiatives which can help us reduce gaseous emissions and work in collaboration with several organization in creating the awareness.
